About the Event
We have developed an ongoing industrial arts curriculum for students ages 14+ whom are currently unable to attend schools that have been closed owing to the Coronavirus. Class is offered at $600 per week. The schedule is intended to conform to regular school hours. Class size is a maximum of ten students.
We hope that we can turn this difficult period into an excellent learning opportunity for our clients while supporting the schedules and needs of working parents. Tuition is for one week of instruction and includes all gear and equipment required.
Class size will be limited to a maximum of ten students. In order to conduct this class without jeapordizing the safety of the students and instructors, we will be implementing stringent pro-active procedures to ensure that participation does not increase the risks posed by the coronavirus.
Class will be conducted during the normal school hours. Clients can arrive any time AFTER the 7 a.m. start time, and can be picked up at any time BEFORE the end time of 4:30.
We ask that clients be at least 14 years of age.
Classes will follow the general pattern of traditional industrial arts eductaion.
Subjects will include:
Shop Safety
Layout and pattern work
MIG welding (GMAW and FCAW)
Plasma cutting
CNC Plasma cutting
Project planning and research
Grinding
Shearing, cutting
Fabrication
We will supply progressively challenging sculptural and welding projects.
The intent is to provide an alternative for clients that would otherwise be stuck at home with nothing to do until the coronavirus is subdued.
The circumstances surrounding this class are unusual so we ask that you read the following carefully and respond with any questions you may have.
We are located in a 3000 sq foot space inside the warehouse at 7800 seventh ave south Seattle Wa 98178 in the Olympic Steel Door building (the biggest sign on the building reads "Lumenomics") Please insist your child dress very very warmly, The weather next Monday will be hovering around 50 degrees. It always feels ten degrees colder than ambient inside the warehouse. They will be very cold if they dress for comfortable indoor temperatures.
Clients must wear shop appropriate clothing, heavy boots with no nylon components and cotton hoodies (most are 80/20 cotton polyester, these are fine) and jeans or work pants. Fleece is okay UNDER cotton, no nylon windbreakers, no nylon and no polyester in general.
Snacks and lunch, we are happy to provide water and such but the closest food sources are still inconvenient. We prefer to have clients on site between drop off and pick-up.
Phones are distracting. We will ask clients to either leave phones turned off, at home or only check them at lunch.
Homework, we expect to ask clients to do a certain amount of design and research at home, hopefully in a way that will be fun and not burdensome.
Hours, You can drop clients as early as nine a.m. and pick them up as late as 4:30. Students will not miss out on vital info if they arrive or leave at odd times. We are implementing a deliberately flexible educational experience in a small group so we can work very flexibly. We may adjust hours once we have discussed schedules with clients in person.
Vector control, we must insist that instructors and clients are in perfect health. To this end, we will stay home and arrange for a substitute if we are not demonstrably well, and we are in the uncomfortable position of insisting, of necessity, that clients that are not in demonstrably perfect health stay home. We will provide a tuition refund for any time missed by students that are unwell.
Parents will be asked to sign waivers for clients under 18 years of age.
Our goal at every step is to provide a safe educational opportunity to our clients and even a case of the "sniffles" would compromise this entirely within the current epidemiological context.
We are implementing the following safety protocol to mitigate the impacts of the Coronavirus on our staff, clients and the community.
We are installing several "no touch" hand sanitizers.
Our classes and group activities will be limited to ten or fewer clients.
Staff or clients in other than demonstrably non-contagious condition will be required to self-quarantine.
We will refund tuition in the event that illness precludes participation.
We will be avoiding all non-vital social activities.
All high traffic surfaces, work surfaces and equipment will be disinfected pre-and post use.
We use social distancing within the work environment. Our space is 3000 square foot, we will utilize our space in a way that helps mitigate potential vectors as per current cdc recommendations.
We will monitor cdc, state, and federal recommendations to ensure we are implementing the best available prophylactic measures in a timely fashion.
Despite the fact that our clients are in the lowest-risk segment of the population, and we are unlikely to be seriously impacted personally, we are committed to doing our part to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus on the broader population.
This public health concern concretely demonstrates that all humans are inextricably connected and that we share fundamental responsibilities to the health and safety of each and every living person. Our heath protocol are intended to solidly embrace this responsibility.

Rusty Oliver
